IOM Chief Reaffirms Commitment to Safe and Regular Migration in Zimbabwe

IOM Director General Ms. Amy Pope meets His Excellency President Emmerson D. Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reiterated its commitment to supporting Zimbabwe’s efforts to advance safe, regular, and orderly migration, and to help the country realise the benefits and opportunities well managed migration can bring.  The message came during a two-visit by the IOM Director-General, Ms. Amy Pope, who was received by the Head of State, His Excellency, President Emmerson Mnangagwa.  Discussions with the President, senior government Ministers, donors, heads of UN agencies, migrants and communities focused on labour migration, border governance, migration data, supporting returning migrants, and climate-induced displacement and mobility.  IOM highlighted the importance of strengthening Zimbabwe’s migration management systems to ensure the well-being and rights of migrants.

On labour migration, IOM advocates for improved systems to protect migrant workers while enhancing their contributions to Zimbabwe’s economy. Border governance was another critical area, with discussions centered on facilitating safe and efficient cross-border movement and addressing challenges related to irregular migration.  The enhancement of migration data collection and analysis was highlighted as essential for evidence-based policymaking, while IOM’s reintegration programs for returning migrants were showcased as a model for community-based solutions that transform lives. Addressing the growing challenge of climate-induced mobility, IOM reaffirmed its support for Zimbabwe in mitigating climate-driven displacement and building resilience in affected communities.

“We are committed to working closely with Zimbabwe to manage migration in a way that is humane, sustainable, and inclusive,” said IOM Director General Amy Pope. “By fostering safe and regular migration pathways, we can unlock the potential of migration as a driver of development and resilience.”

During a visit in Goromonzi District, DG Pope observed a training for community leaders working in communities with high returns of Zimbabweans. She also participated in a workshop on Alternatives to Detention, promoting humane solutions that align with international standards.

Speaking at the pre-event for International Migrants Day in Harare, DG Pope recognized Zimbabwe’s pivotal role in the Southern Africa region as a transit, origin, and destination country for migrants. She applauded Zimbabwe’s leadership in implementing the Global Compact for Migration (GCM) and its decision to become a GCM champion country, while commending the government’s progress in aligning migration policies with international frameworks.

This year’s International Migrants Day theme, “Every Step,” highlights the importance of safe and regular migration pathways in harnessing migration as a positive force for development and resilience.  With a long-standing presence in Zimbabwe, IOM continues to work in close partnership with the government, donors, and regional stakeholders. The organization’s efforts aim to enhance the lives of migrants, support host communities, and foster regional cooperation, contributing to a more just, inclusive, and sustainable future for all.
