IOM Statement: Somali Migrants Dead In Boat Tragedy Off Madagascar Coast

November 25, 2024, Madagascar – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is deeply saddened by the news of a tragic boat incident in which at least 5 Somali migrants have died.

The incident occurred off the coast of Madagascar, near Nosy Be on Friday, November 22. The migrants were trying to reach the island of Mayotte, when their vessel hit rough waters and developed mechanical failures exposing the migrants to life-threatening conditions at sea. 48 survived and were brought to shore.  According to eyewitness statements, the vessel was severely overcrowded and ill-equipped.

IOM Madagascar is working closely with local authorities to assist survivors. Local authorities are providing medical care and shelter, and the Somali Embassy is assisting with identifying nationals.

Authorities in Madagascar say there could be additional casualties, underscoring the urgent need for robust measures to protect migrants and prevent future loss of life along this sea route.

This is the latest in a string of similar tragedies. Earlier this month at least 25 migrants died off the coast of the Comoros Islands, trying to reach Mayotte. According to the French Senate an estimated 7,000–10,000 migrants had died on this route since 1995.
