IOM in Rwanda
For more than two decades Rwanda has experienced increased political, economic and social stability. In addition its strategic geographical location has made it a safe haven for migrants and refugees from neighboring countries fleeing conflict and political instability.
The migration dynamics in Rwanda are very unique as the country has a considerable number of refugees and has been receiving Rwandan nationals returning home after years of living as refugees or asylum seekers abroad. So far, over 3.4 Million people have returned since the 1994 genocide.
As the leading intergovernmental organization on migration IOM supports the Government of Rwanda in management of migration related issues. Among the key issues being addressed in partnership with the government are Diaspora Engagement, Human Trafficking, Return and Reintegration of Rwandan nationals and Refugee Resettlement to third countries.
